In urban drainage systems , water which carries sediment particles as well as garbages of various sizes, can cause blocking of canals. These drainage systems designed to convey or dispose water have experienced siltation and clogging. The drainage capacity i s reduced to a considerable degree due to the deposition of such sediments. One way of cleaning this canal is by releasing s urges which will agitate the deposited sediment into suspension and carries it into the downstream as bed load or suspended load. Graphical relationships are developed in t his study to relate the volume of sediment transport with the isolated surge and sediment characteristics and the number of flushes. The study is confined to the use of a single representative size of sediment of 0 .81 mm diameter and specific dimensions of the initial sand pile as well as a specified constant head in the upstream reservoir. The study provides the basis for further experiments and analysis to be carried out to d eve l op more generalize d relationships and to verify the results with laboratory and field data.
