A computer-based application software information system for an academic institute

The study was jointly conducted with the staff of the Regional Computer Center to gather information on software and to establish the necessary objectives and requirements for the system design. A key to success in many real-time operations lies in the recognition of the machine limitations and the building into the system of appropriate human capabilities (MARTIN, 1973). With regard to the current operating system (VM/370 CMS) in the AIT Regional Computer Center, to VMS/TSO in the future and to some other major considerations, a method of approach was adopted, using PL/I as the programming language, IBM 3277 Graphic Attachment Support for the screen management, and Virtual Storage Access method for the file organization. A manual procedures of the software installation and disposal has been designed to strengthen the management and control of the application software at the Regional Computer Center. Hopefully this manual procedures will be enforced by the AIT authorities. Chapter I through Chapter III contain sections that describe the software problems encountered and the literature review. Chapter VII gives the conclusion and recommendations of the study. Chapter IV "Proposed System Overview" contains sections that describe, in general terms, the design concept and facilities of the proposed system. Chapter V "Proposed Manual Procedure" describes the manual procedure of the software management at the AIT Regional Computer Center. Chapter VI "System Design and Specification" gives detailed information on the design specification of the proposed computerized system. For applications programmers, who want to maintain this system, it will be necessary to read Chapter IV and V thoroughly, in order to use these subjects more quickly and efficiently. For the Software Librarian, who will prepare the input data or files necessary to perform a job, it may be necessary to read Chapters V and VI thoroughly in order to handle the system smoothly.
