Two kinds of inventory models are used: one is a deterministic dynamic inventory model, the other is a probabilistic static single-period inventory model. The characteristics of an inventory system and various inventory models are detailed. To solve the associated inventory problems, the various components associated with the inventory models are, as far as possible, objectively evaluated. The optimal order and minimum inventory cost for two building materials, namely steel and formwork, are calculated. The results lead to a set of inventory policies which can be easily implemented by a decision maker. It is also believed that these results provide a rational basis for material management to give optimal inventory costs in general construction practice.
