Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1985 Summary: The performance of a three cylinder diesel. engine on straight diesel mode of operation, with and without throttling and on dual fuel mode of operation with diesel plus LPG and with diesel plus producer gas, has been studied under different conditions. Producer gas was obtained by gasification of charcoal.. All tests were per formed at constant e n gin e speed. Tests on straight diesel with throttling were performed with different throttle settings at constant engine outputs and tests on dual fuel mode of operation were conducted at constant engine outputs with various gas-diesel oil proportions. Producer gas was inducted by throttling the intake air, whereas in case of diesel plus LPG throttling was not required. The results indicate that.. throttling the air supply at part loads improve the thermal efficiency o f the engine at part throttle. This system permitted a bout b8% of the fuel energy to be supplied by the producer gas, because of undersized gasifier, and about 80% of that o f LPG , even 90% at about full load, but this resulted in severe knocking and no safe engine operation could be accomplished.
