Construction of new transmission facilities, such as lines or substations, requires long term planning and large capital investment. The main purpose of transmission system planning is to determine the locations and sizes of new transmission facilities in order to meet future demand in the economical and reliable manner. Therefore, careful study to evaluate the planning is required. This study identifies the concepts of power transfers on transmission line, stability considerations, applied to 500kV transmission expansion planning in Vietnam during 2002-2010. Analysis and evaluations of the transmission system with generation planning aim to satisfy the forecasted load demand under thermal limitation, voltage limitation and small signal stability limitation. The study also includes recommendations to improve the stability of 500kV system based on the results of analysis and evaluations. Power World software is used to simulate the existing and planned system.
