Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1995 Summary: A study was conducted to evaluate the current standard of practice for the design and construction of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in Thailand. From the findings of this study, it was concluded that Thailand is approaching internationally accepted standards for design and construction of the MSW landfills. The study was started with the review of design and construction of ten recently engineered landfills, then it became more specific to the four of them, namely Pathumthani, Sri Racha, Nakhon Sawan, and Hua Hin. Evaluation was made on the basis of design, construction, and specification of liner, site selection and construction practices of the MSW landfills. Factor of safety of the landfills were calculated by PCSTABL5M computer program. The minimum factor of safety of Pathumthani, Sri Racha, Nakhon Sawan, and Hua Hin landfill were 1.56, 1.61, 1.65, and 1.63 respectively. Refuse settlement was calculated by SOWERS model. Results showed that the settlement in all the landfills was under acceptable limit. The liner stability was evaluated by adopting the methodology given by GIROUD and BEECH (1989).
