Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 2017 Summary: The rapid pace of urbanisation can push the redevelopment of former municipal solid waste landfil ls. Due to the inherent heterogeneity of the garbage deposits in landfills, the determination of ground parameters for foundation design allows for margin. In this study, physical and mechanical properties of solid waste was investigated at a Lat Kabrang Industrial Estate project site in Bangkok. The settlement characteristics were studied, as well as the shaft resistance parameters based on results of dynamic load tests conducted at the site. The adjusted SPT N values vary widely with respect to depth. The relation of SPT N values to shaft friction varies widely, as well. Dynamic pile load test results were conservative in determining the shaft friction where the pile passes through garbage layers. And although, effective angle of friction for garbag e layers may be in accord with published range of values, the at - rest earth pressure has a wider range. Unit weight recorded tend to be closer to values for soil than for garbage, and the range of values for moisture content tend to be wider than in publi shed literature. As there were very few recorded values for unit weight, and moisture content for garbage layers, the results for these parameters may not be completely representative of the garbage deposit at the project site.
