Undisturbed soil samples were taken from the depth of 20 ft- 22.5 .ft (soft clay) and from the depth of 30 ft- 32.5 ft.(medium clay). The index properties of soil were determined at every 2 ft increment in depth. The one-dimensional consolidation tests were conducted in this investigation. Test results show that the coefficient of secondary compression increases with pressure up to a certain peak after which it decreases with further increase in pressure. The coefficient of secondary compression is dependent upon the void ratio but is independent of the pressure increment ratio The rate of secondary compression and secondary compressibility decreases with increase in applied pressure and pressure increment ratio./The coefficient of secondary compression is reduced as increase in pressure increment duration. The ratio of secondary to primary compression decreases markedly as the pressure increment ratio increases. The experimental results also show that the compression-time curves are defined more accurately by Wahls's theory than by the other theories.
