The laboratory shear tests are performed on these models with different irregular joint features to provide a theoretical framework for inter preting the shear strength of discontinuous rocks. Test variables include the inclination of teeth, number of teeth and the degree of joint roughness which alter the joint roughness coefficient (JRC). The results show significant scale effect on JRC, the effect is more pronounced in rough undulating joint. Scale effect on peak dilation angle, asperity failure component and peak friction angle is observed at different normal stresses. The effect is subdued at high normal stress. For the same JRC value of different joint lengths, scale effect is observed only in peak dilation angle and asperity failure component. A practical approach to estimate the strength behaviour of jointed rock is suggested.
