In the past three decades, Taiwan has experienced a high rate of industrial and economic growth. However, rapid industrialization and urbaniza tion have brought a number of problems and this study examines one such problem: industrial development in relation to land-use and pollution in Kaohsiung city. This paper will first overview the historic development of industrial development, the existing conditions and the developing trends in the city. It will then use the screening matrix to select the potential industries of the city, and evaluate the suitability of the existing industrial estates in order to upgrade and improve the industrial structure, land-use conditions and environmental quality. The major problems of urban planning industrial zones are mixed and incompatible land-use, inadequate infrastructure and management and environmental impacts. It is a difficult and sensitive job to decide which strategies should be adopted in those industrial zones. Thus this research focuses attention on the issues and problems of the urban planning industrial zones in central areas of the city. Finally, strategies and measures are recommended which can be helpful for land use planning and industrial development in the future .
