Since the number of automatic recording gages are not sufficient to describe the areal patterns of the first three durations, a method of reducing the daily records of the standard raingages to these durations is used. Inter-station correlation coefficients are computed for the 55-raingage network. They are then transformed to the Fisher's z-values. These transformed coefficients of correlation are found to diminish gradually with distance. The variation is reasonably explained for all the four durations by the selected functions: z = Ae -Bx and Z = C + D tn x , where Z is the transformed coefficient of correlation, x is the interstation distance in kms, and A,B,C,D are coefficients.
