The simulation model was developed based on the IEEE 802.5 Token Ring standard which employs the optional priority mechanism described in this standard. Real-time traffic are characterized as those which are guaranteed to be delivered within a prespecif ied delay upperbound. Real-time packets delivered after its deadline are considered lost. Network parameters such as the number of nodes that support real-time traffic" the packet sizes of both real time and nonreal-time packets, and the percentage of real-time traffic in the network were varied in order to demonstrate their effect on the mean delay and throughput performance of the real time Token Ring LAN. In addition, it is shown in this thesis that the Token Ring network is able to cope with the requirements of present real-time application.
