An assessment of farmers' responses to government policy implementation on pesticide use and its effects on environment pollution : a case study of rice cultivation in Karawang District, West Java Province, Indonesia

Assessment of farmers' response on pesticide usage show that there was a significant difference between IPM and non-IPM farmers' perception, knowledge and ability on pesticide use in their rice cultivation, IPM farmers have better understanding than non-IPM farmers. Gross margin analysis for Ciherang variety of rice showed that the net returns were not significantly different among different income groups of farmers both for IPM and non-IPM farmers. Survey results show that dimehypo and cypermethrin are the most dominant synthetic insecticides used by farmers. Laboratory test results of the milled rice sample analysis show that there was no pesticide residue of dimehypo and cypermethrin (limit of determination 0.010 ppm and 0.011 ppm). And also soil sample for some active ingredients of pesticide persistence were detected but with less than 0.0002 ppm concentration. The levels of all pesticide residues were low or below MRLs of WHO because most of the farmers have applied the recommended pesticides.
