The study is to predict the extent of salt-water intrusion in a confined aquifer. Starting from the mass balance equation for the transport of a solute in porous media considering the effects of convection, molecular diffusion and mechanical dispersion, the simplified convective dispersion equation for 2-dimensional case is derived. The unsteady flow equation for the confined aquifer is derived from fluid continuity and Darcy's generalized equation (where the flow dependence of density is included). The convective dispersion equation and the (density-dependent) flow equation form the basis of a Finite Element model using the linear interpolation functions and triangular elements. A hypothetical confined aquifer with constant parameters is analyzed for the prediction of dispersed interface without tidal oscillations and then with tidal oscillations at the ocean front.
