Treatibility of phenol and 2,4-DCP by BAC-SBR and SBR system were studied in six reactors using synthetic wastewater. Phenol and 2,4-DCP were fed to the reactors as only carbon sources and the influent concentration was varied according to the experimental objectives. Totally 5 runs (3 phases) of experiments were conducted. Different reaction time and sludge retention time was used in different Run. When the influent concentration of 116 mg/L of phenol and 100 mg/L of2,4-DCP was used, both BAC-SBR and SBR systems reach 90% .of COD and 99% of total phenol removal except for SBRI with SRT of 3 days. BAC-SBR system shows lower effluent COD and phenol at beginning of the operation than SBR system and stable effluent throughout the operation. When the influent concentration of 2,4-DCP was increased to 200 mg/L, its toxic effect to reactor performance was checked. The BAC-SBR system shows high tolerance ability than SBR system. In the last Run, the influent concentration of 162 mg/L of phenol and 140 mg/L of 2,4- DCP was used. The effluent COD and phenol from BAC-SBR system is lower than from SBR system with same SRT. Short sludge retention time gives high effluent. Based on the data obtained, a mathematical model was used to simulate the reactor performance. Some empirical constants such as a, p, y were calculated as 1.031 , 2.225 and 1.1764 respectively. The model can be used to predict the performance of the BAC-SBR system.
