The objective of the study was to carry out research on combustion of rice husk in a pilot scale multiple-spouted bed as well as a spout-fluid bed. Hydrodynamics of the multiple spouted bed was also studied. The experimental beds were designed and fabricated as a part of the study. It was possible to burn rice husk efficiently in the multiple-spouted bed with both over-bed and under-bed feeding. However, the under-bed feeding was found to give slightly higher combustion efficiency and smoother operation compared with over-bed feeding. In both cases, the efficiency loss due to CO formation was found to be significantly higher than loss due to unburnt carbon in ash. Spout-fluid bed configuration was found to be particularly attractive. It attained a combustion efficiency in the range of 94.44 % to 96.24 %. Concentration of CO in the flue gas from spouted bed combustion was in the range of 0.3 % to 1.5 %, while methane concentration was ranged from 0 to 0.85 %. N20 was not detectable in any of the combustor configurations studied.
