Intelligent transportation system (ITS) holds great promise for public works professionals seeking to optimize those public investment strategies that deal with traffic congestion and other growth pressures. Advanced traffic and fleet management systems as well as traveler information and vehicle- based systems can take advantage of information technology advances and riveted market products to substantially improve the producti vity, connectivity and safety of transportation. And as the new federal transportation act of India further spurs deployment of these systems, its research program will continue to play a vital role in supporting such development and the overall evolution of ITS. Such research includes developing technology tools, providing testing and evaluation environments and helping advance the state of the practice. The main objective of using Bluetooth Technology in this dissertation work was to overcome the drawbacks of the existing Bus fleet management system in Bangalore which uses Global Positioning System (GPS) and to make a user friendly system, to facilitate increased usage of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) services, particularly by people who value their time greatly and therefore cannot afford to waste time waiting indefinitely at bus»stops not knowing when a bus will show up and thus increasing ridership and thereby achieve augmentation of revenues for BMTC, hence enable it to go on improving services. Bus Fleet Management System (BFMS) was made to track the location of the bus and informed the waiting commuter about the current status of the bus at appropriate bus stop. This document presents the systematic information about the Bus Fleet Management System (BFMS). BFMS utilized the WTI2 Bluetooth transmitters and receivers, PIC 3011 as a Microcontroller, GPRS module for transmitting the data to the server and LCD (16x2) in order to relay accurate bus status at particular bus stop. The functionality of each used component, overall system design and software module are discussed. In addition to that, design decisions, challenges and obstacles that occurred during the phase of the project work are explained. Buses moving between locations were outfitted with Bluetooth device which is embedded on a pic board with a micro controller and having information relating to the identities of the objects. On the other side a Bluetooth fixed on a pic board along with micro controller and GPRS device is installed in bus stops which identifies the moving bus and sends a signal to the central server, thus giving the real time information. The results obtained were very promising and can be considered for commercial implementation. The detailed study is discussed in this dissertation work
