Open-Windrow composting of cattle feedlot wastes was investigated. The "Ground Surface Continuous Composting" method, simply operated without turning the compost piles, was adopted to study the nitrogen conservation and bacteria inactivation during the composting process. The compost piles were designed with an initial C:N ratio of 30:1 and moisture content of the composting materials at about 70% throughout the composting period. Composting of the organic matters was found to be completed within 30 days but about 40 days of composting yielded a safe compost product from a view point of fecal coliform concentration. Nitrogen conservation in the compost product was about 99%. Total coliform was more resistant to die-off than fecal streptococcus. The patterns of bacteria die-off during composting was found to follow the Chick's law but with some modifications.
