This thesis presents the results of an investigation of some of the engineering properties of compacted Rangsit clay. The sample material which was collected from the drying crust was a highly compressible soil classified in the group of A-7-6 (20). The influence of dry density and moisture content on the compressibility and permeability characteristics was investigated. In addition an attempt was made to measured the swelling pressure. It was found that samples compacted at optimum moisture content are slightly less compressible than at other moisture contents. The consolidation tests showed that the compacted clay behaves similar to natural stiff clays. The permeability tests showed that non-saturated specimens had a much lower coefficient of permeability than specimens that were saturated by back-pressuring prior to being tested.
