Research Report (M. Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1968

A study of the effect of the magnitude of load-increment ratio and load-increment duration on the one-dimensional compressibility of undisturbed Soft and Medium Bangkok Clay has been made. The load» increment ratio has been varied from a value of 0.25 to 2.00 and the load-increment duration from 1 day to 7 days. It was found that the compressibility of both the Soft Bangkok Clay and the Medium Bangkok Clay is not significantly affected by the load-increment ratio and the load-increment duration within the range of magnitudes used in the investigation. However, the rate of primary and secondary compression are affected by the loading condition. Bonds developed during long duration of a load-increment add to the clay's resistance to further compression. For fairly large load-increment ratio (>1),the effect of bonds on the rate of primary compression is insignificant, but for small load-increment ratio, it is significant.
