A complete computer programme has been developed to simulate the hourly solar energy input to collectors. The models used are, mainly based on the data related to the measurements of sunshine and solar radiation in Thailand. The simulation of daily totals of solar radiation uses a second order (Markov) model, whereas a first order (purely random) model has been used for the simulation of hourly totals. Thus persistence of weather conditions only from day to day has been modelled. Representing persistence from hour to hour would have made the model so unwieldy as to be impractical. Direct and diffuse components on a horizontal surface have been separated. The amount of direct solar radiation on a surface perpendicular to beam each hour has also been calculated.
