Benzo-[a]-pyrene (BaP) on particulates was collected by high-volume sampler on glass fiber filter from the air in Shanghai urban area. Spectrofluoremetric methods was used to determine the concentration of BaP. Furthermore, correlations between seasonal meteorological parameters and BaP concentrations were studied to reveal characteristic BaP for various emission sources. The range of BaP concentrations varied from 0.576 to 2.238 ng/m3 in winter and 0.495 to 2.403 ng/m3 in early spring within total 40 samples. No direct correlation of ambient BaP was seen with the temperature, but rather with the wind direction from various emission sources. It is likely to conclude from this study that vehicle exhaust and coal-burning were the two main sources of BaP in Shanghai urban air during the sampling periods.
