Overvoltage may determine the insulation of various components of the transmission system. With the steady increase in transmission voltages, switching surges have become the governing factor in the design of insulation for EHV and UHV systems. Of major importance are the switching surges by line energization, which cause travelling waves on the transmission line the most severe at the end remote from the switching point. When energizing transmission line, severe overvoltage can be generated. This study is concerned with overvoltage due to switching energization. It is more important because this study applies to a new 500kV transmission line not only in insulation coordination (design) but also m operation. In this study, a statistical approach is used. The MATLAB program is used for the generation of random closing times. Statistical Calculation of Energization Overvoltage has been done by the PSCAD/EMTDC program. The reconunendation of IEC 71 was applied to the statistical analysis. The results show that the highest values of phase to ground and phase to phase overvoltage are l .68pu and 2.68pu respectively corresponding to closing times of 14 ms, l 2ms, l 6ms for phase A, B, C. The results agree with the regulation of EVN and standard insulation level IEC No71 for 500kV systems
