Tsunami in the Indian Ocean December 26, 2004 is one of the most serious natural disasters in the history of mankind. Thereare several options to mitigate damage from tsunami and mangroves are one of those options which provide good protection for environment and are cost effective. Therefore, artificial mangrove model is constructed at the AIT laboratory for studying characteristic of tsunami for wave energy dissipation. Rhizophora Apiculata is selected as mangrove model construction because it can resist Tsunami wave and easy to be found in the South East Asia. There are two main parameters of mangrove model which are concerned in this experiment such as width of mangrove model layout and the effect of each part of mangrove. The Tsunami Wave Generator creates various wave height values for measuring characteristic of wave that behind mangrove model layout. The Tsunami wave characteristic such as velocity is used to calculate the energy dissipation rate. From this experimentation it was found that mangrove forest has capability to mitigate damage from Tsunami. The most velocity reduction occurred when the width of mangrove model is 1.30 m which is the maximum width of mangrove in this experimentation. It can reduce 29.16 % from maximum. It leads to maximum energy dissipation because energy dissipation was effected by wave velocity reduction. After this case, the canopy of mangrove is cut; the velocity reduction is reduced from 29.16 % to 14.6 %, and it reduces a little when tests with only root of mangrove. Therefore, the canopy of mangrove has the most effect to the tsunami reduction. The relationship between drag coefficient and the ratio of wave height, the mangrove height, and the width of the mangrove forest are newly proposed where drag coefficient can be applied for the practical design of tsunami barrier
