Summary, etc. The main objective of this study is to examine the seismic response of the concrete gravity dam model subjected to strong ground motion by shaking table test and numerical simulation. Shaking table tests of scaled structures typically employ two types of excitation: re sonance and ambient testing. In re sonance testing, also known as frequency sweeps, harmonic forces from f unction generators are used to determine dynamic properties. Ambient tests employ the sine-sweep excitations . The shaking table used in the present study can be classified in small one, 1.20 m x 1.00 m., therefore, the length scale is set at 1/100 by considering a model size that could be constructed and tested on the shake table. Similitude require ments between the prototype and the model are important to study beha viour of a concrete gravity dam model. The bentonite- concrete material is considered for deve lopment of material in this study. For the resonance testing of dam model at 35 da ys which showed an amplification of acceleration above the input was 14 Hz and 28 Hz for the first and second model dam, respectively. Test results showed that materi al properties of low strength concrete which are different lead to unlike response. For am bient testing, amplitude accelerations at the base of model dam are 0.550~0.600g and 0.600 ~0.650g for the first and second model dam, respectively. Crack pattern shows in the upper part of the m odel and ran the whole length of the model about 30~40 cm below the top of the model. The numerical simulation of the shaking table test is conducted using ABAQUS with damaged plasticity model. With the actual material properties of model concrete dam and some simulated parameter, the model dams show crack at amplitude acceleration of 0.500 g and 0.700 g for the model dam-1 and model dam-2, respectively. In the model dam-1, cracks develop from upstream to down stream , while crack pattern of the model dam-2 develop in opposite way. Even so both of them still showed plane of damage in same region.
