| Summary, etc. | This research dealt with the speed of vehicles, especially heavy vehicles on downhill segments of two-lane rural highways. Field surveys were conducted on the 8-percent, 6-percent, 5-percent and 4-percent grades of the Saraburi-Lomsak highway and the Sarabuir-Nakorrachasima highway. An electronic stopwatch operated by a start-stop sequencer apparatus from two tape switches was the main apparatus. The study was especially concerned with the behavior of vehicles on various grades and possible locations of escape routes that should be provided for vehicles facing emergencies in downgrade movements. Speed-distance curves of four categories of vehicles on various grades were developed. It was found that vehicle speed increased substantially with distance travelled downhill on grades greater than 6 percent. An important factor which caused a reduction of downhill speed of vehicles was traffic congestion due to slow moving vehicles moving uphill. From the results of the study, it was recommended that for short, steep downgrades, an escape route should be provided at a location of 250 to 500 meters from the summit. |
