Summary, etc. A full scale experimental embankment was constructed to investigate the behavior and performance of hexagonal wire mesh reinforcement system. The strain gauges were affixed in the wire mesh to observed the tension in wire mesh reinforcement. High strength wire were also used to measure the displacements in the reinforcements. The maximum tension line from the strain gages agree with the tie-back wedge or Coulomb/Rankine failure plane at the lower half of the wall and with the coherent gravity failure plane for the upper half of the wall. The maximum tension line agreed with the coherent gravity assumptions used for geogrids. The lateral ea1th pressure coefficients measured during the wall construction varied from a value corresponding to the active condition, Ka, at the base of the wall, to a value nearly of the at rest Ko condition at the top of the wall. From the variation in the stiffness factor as a function of depth and horizontal eaith pressure coefficients, K ,the hexagonal wire mesh has stiffness factor value of (K/Ka =1.6) which is nearer to the geogrids than the metal strip. The maximum displacement occurred in the topmost layer (layer 6) while the minimum occurred in the bottom layer (layer 1). Fmther, the maximum displacement of 125 mm measured from high strength wire extensometer agreed well with the maximum lateral movement measured by the inclinometer 240 days after construction. It was found that there is direct correlation between the displacement and the stress where in the larger the displacement, the higher the stress induced in the hexagonal wire mesh reinforcement. Laboratory pullout tests were conducted on two types of hexagonal wire meshes, one made from galvanized and the other from PVC-coated wires. The test were conducted in different normal pressure wires and various length of specimens. Field pullout tests were performed on dummy reinforcements embedded in full scale test embankment. The maximum strain during the field pullout tests occurred far from facing because of necking effect. The comparison between the field and laboratory pullout results, indicated that the maximum pullout load from laboratory is slightly higher than that from field because of the facing condition, amounts of compaction, and moisture contents.
