Summary, etc. Two sets of model ponds were used, one was in the laboratory and the other was outdoors. Each set were composed of two ponds with a liquid depth of 36 in. and 10 in. From this experiment, the effects of environmental conditions, BOD loading, and depth were studied, Weinberger{u2019}s synthetic sewage with a strength of 200 mg/1 was fed continuously to the ponds. The BOD loading was varied from 100 to 400 lb BOD/day/acre with increments of 100 lb BOD/day/acre. In the first run (100 lb BOD/day/acre) the efficiency of BOD removal based on the filtered BOD was higher than 957 in all ponds. During the second run, the indoor ponds turned anaerobic and the efficiency of BOD removal decreased. This 200 lb BOD/day/ acre loading was the critical loading for this climate and as the loadings were increased beyond 200 lb BOD/day/acre, the degree of stabilization of both outdoor ponds dropped. The deep pond became anaerobic at 400 lb BOD/day/acre. The shallow pond could maintain aerobic conditions for all loadings, but objectionable sludge covered the surface at the highest loading. The loading of 300 lb BOD/day/acre is recommended as a maximum permissible loading for this area.
