520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This thesis describes the results of a manual model updating study conducted on a 50- storey reinforced concrete shear core building. The output-only modal identification results obtained from ambient vibration measurements of the building were used to update a finite element model of the structure in the first phase. During the second phase of calibration, the earthquake data obtained from the seismic accelerograph were used. There was a good match between peak joint acceleration obtained by numerical FE model and those experimentally measured at three floors where the seismic accelerograph were placed. The match demonstrated the accuracy of the finite element model to predict realistic dynamic behavior of the building under various seismic forces. The initial model of the structure was developed from the information provided in the design documentation of the building. Different parameters of the model were then modified, after sensitivity study, using a manual process to improve the correlation between measured and calculated modal parameters. As a type of nonstructural component, infill walls play a significant role in seismic behavior of high-rise buildings which is generally ignored during the analysis. The analysis results revealed that the structural performance under small/large earthquake records were both strengthened by infill walls, and the contribution of infill walls should be considered for better accuracy in the design process. A five step and a four-step process for calibrating a model is presented for first phase and second phase of calibration. The model obtained after second phase of calibration should be adopted as a final calibrated model. Structural evaluations (global and local responses) between the calibrated and uncalibrated model both are within the acceptable limits. However, calibrated model is suggested to be taken into consideration for future analysis.
