| Summary, etc. | This study aims at analyzing the development of the manufacturing sector in Taiwan District, Republic of China for the 1953-73 period. brief account of Taiwan's economic background is first presented from A the following viewpoints: the resource base, the economic structure and its growth, and the role played by the Government in its development. The growth and performance of the manufacturing sector for the period 1953-73 are analyzed in terms of gross value added, gross output, export, and number of factories. Some of the characteristics of the manufacturing sector like general structure, employment, capital, and productivity are then discussed. Important industries in the sector are then identified. This is followed by a detailed study of the development and the characteristics of the food industry. Based on the findings presented above, a quantitative model is developed to approximate the manufacturing sector and its relationship to the economy. Finally, the present state of development of the manufacturing sector is discussed. The future development potentials of the manufacturing sector are identified and the area where attention on relevant policy should be devoted is delineated. Recommendations for future work are then enumerated. |
