Summary, etc. In Thailand, large amount of country expenditures are invested in the maintaining and upgrading the existing highway facilities. These amounts are utilized in the entire nation to maintain or enhance safety and efficiency level for road users. However, the maintenance operation or enhancement of the existing highway facilities may lead to the major traffic disruption and hazardous environments especially when facing with different traffic situations and road geometries. Therefore, the maintenance and construction work zones should be planned to alleviate these traffic disruption and road hazards. This research developed the computerized work zone management system (WZMAS) to facilitate the practitioners in planning and design safe traffic control for work zone. Computerized WZMAS replicates the work zone planning processes. WZMAS is also intended to eliminate the subjective decision-making process from different personal opinions by integrating four significant work zone planning and design components including work zone scheduling, closure section, geometric design and mitigation selection process into a single computerized system, the WZMAS. The traffic data from 18 work sites are collected for developing a computerized "Work Zone Scheduling Analysis Tool" for short-term work zone using the "volumecompensation" concept. Results obtained from scheduling process identify the optimal period of lane closure that provides the least traffic disruption. Data involving existing highway facility types, existing maintenance/construction activities, possible closure options/stages of construction, anticipated problems, and existing work zone configuration for certain maintenance/construction activities at different road geometries are then acquired. These data are acquired from three major sources related literatures, current work site observations throughout the country, and discussions with experienced practitioners. These data are summarized and categorized as facts and rules for WZMAS development. These facts and rules involving with closure options are incorporated into work zone database and knowledge based to develop the closure selection module. On the other hand, knowledge gathered from literatures as well as standards and specifications are applied in the work zone geometric design module development. This module considers various factors such as the location, traveling speed, extents of work zone, etc that affect the geometric design of work zone. The module analyzes information and determines the proper work zone layout for each maintenance project. Similarly, the facts and rules regarding the anticipated work zone problems and mitigation techniques are incorporated in the developed database and knowledge-based for work zone mitigation module. The four different modules and the work zone database are combined in the work zone management system development. Results obtained from work zone management system provide the optimal schedule, possible closure type, graphically geometry of work zone, and possible mitigation technique that are appropriate to the maintenance or construction activity at certain condition. These results can be used to assist the practitioners in planning and operating maintenance/construction activities by providing a safe and efficient traffic control plan
