520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Bangkok International Airport, situated 25 km north of the city, has been provided with excellent highway access from the city, and the dominant ground traffic reaches the airport by this means. Commercial, industrial, and academic communities situated north of the airport have ready access from the north, but return trips to the north require initial travel of about 4.5 km southerly toward the city, a U-turn at Laksri Interchange, and a 4.5-km return in the northward direction prior to passing the airport in the intended direction. the objective of the present study was an evaluation of the economic and physical feasibility of a U-turn overcrossing of the Princess Viphavadi Rangsit Highway in the vicinity of the airport to avoid the need of the 9-km trip through the Laksri Interchange. Roadside interviews were conducted for 12 hours on each of three days to determine an origin-destination trip matrix for U-turning vehicles at the Laksri Interchange. Those trips which, because of origin or because of destination, could not benefit from a U-turn overcrossing in the vicinity of the airport were eliminated from further consideration. The candidate trip matrix was expanded to represent 24-hour movement, initially from the 60% sample of interviews by means of the 12-hour classified vehicle count of U-turning vehicles, and subsequently by 24/12-n ratios obtained from the Thai Department of Highways classified volume counts of through traffic southbound on Princess Viphavadi Rangsit Highway. Vehicle operating costs and the distance value of travel time were obtained from the Highway Department. These were applied to evaluate the benefits to be derived through elimination of the 9-km return trips presently required of traffic destined for locations north of the airport. A benefic/cost ratio of 4.0, and an internal rate of return of about 80% were calculated, based on an estimated investment of Baht 40-million for a new U-turn overcrossing.
