Summary, etc. Traditionally, the normal clay core of the dam is compacted either wet of optimum to reduce seepage flow or dry of optimum to provide stability to the dam. The core of the dam has to be low permeability clayey soil to work as a water tightness against the seepage. Sometimes, due to limited locally available materials, it is unavoidable to use soil having sufficient swelling potential in the core. The swelling soil can heave upon inundation of water which may increase the permeability of the soil and can diminish the water tightness against seepage and can alter the stability of the dam as well. In this research, the swelling soil was considered to be used in the dam{u2019}s core. The swelling soil was compacted with different {u1D6FE}{u1D451} and initial water contents to investigate the changes in the seepage and stability of the dam after the heaving of the swelling soil. The swelling of soil depends on many factors such as the type of clay minerals, soil structure, initial water content, the density of the soil, and overburden stresses on the soil. The swelling potential can be measured in the laboratory using the consolidation-swell (CS) and constant volume (CV) tests. The swelling depth was calculated from the constant volume swelling pressure for each case. The soil properties were modified only in that region to investigate the changes in seepage and stability of the dam. From this study, it was concluded that the swelling soil should be compacted to a lower degree of compaction at wet of OMC which will reduce the swelling of the soil and therefore will reduce the seepage flow. But if stability was the main concern, then the swelling soil should be compacted to a relatively high degree of compaction at dry of OMC, giving more strength. From the above discussion, it can be concluded that for expansive soil used in the core of the dam, the same traditional compaction condition of seepage and stability can be used as that used for normal clayey soil.
