| Summary, etc. | An alternative design consideration, taking into account the effect of continuity at supports is proposed for precast concrete slab systems. An I section having a wide top flange is considered to be the appropriate precast section. The proposed section is analysed in detail by using the conditions of equilibrium and compatibility of strains and assuming a parabolic stress-strain relationship for the compressed concrete. A microcomputer package is developed in order to conduct a parametric study of the proposed solution. The parameters adopted are the number of spans, span lengths, and levels of live load. The feasibility on the use of the proposed slab systems is investigated based on the total cost, unit weight, and service load behavior of the slabs. In the comparison , two types of existing precast sections available in the market are used. From the parametric study, the proposed floor slab systems are found to be more economical than some selected conventional systems, t he unit weight of the proposed slab can be reduced by 10 - 30 % depending on the span length and live load level. Their performance can also be enhanced by the effects of continuity at supports. As a result, for large floor area and span lengths between 5 - 8 m, the proposed floor slab systems are suggested for use instead of the conventional slab systems. |
