| Summary, etc. | The effects of mould size and density variations on the CBR of a lateritic soil were investigated. The CBR value and density of a given soil are affected by the confining pressure and the capability of the soil to deform laterally. The load-settlement relationship from which the CBR value is derived and failure mode in the test are also influenced by the mould size as the lateral confinement is dependent on the size of the mould and the method of compaction. A linear pressure-settlement relationship for a limited depth of penetration of the CBR plunger suggested that the material was responding elastically for the loading in this study. A failure mode similar to local failure was observed after a large penetration. A relationship between the CBR value and elastic modulus obtained from undrained triaxial tests was used to estimate a suitable design CBR in the field. A broad review of the practical aspects of the CBR test was made, and the test value for pavement design examined. |
