Summary, etc. An experimental study of the hydraulic jumps occurring in various locations of a gradually expanding channel is presented. Limitation to the previously arrived at derivations for various characteristics of hydraulic jump.in expanding channel assuming an elliptical profile of the jump, were considered. An empirical modification for the equation describing the location of the jump was made. Equations describing the various characteristics of the expanding channel jump were tested experimentally, checking their validity and limitations. Characteristics when an expanding channel behaves as abrupt expansion were also studied. Classification of various types of jumps forming in expanding channels, was as well attempted. Experiments were conducted using 13 different angles of expansion, from 13°301 to 27°001 for expanding channel jump characteristics and 30°001 to 90°001 for the abrupt expansion . While the general equation for the jump agreed well with the experimental results for a large range of expansion angles, a slight deviation was observed at very large angles of divergence. Empirically derived equation for the location of the jump differed to the extent to be improvised. Pressure measurements along the sidewall showed a perfect hydrostatic condition. Angles above 27°001 were tested for the behaviour as abrupt expansion as the practicability of the formation of a stable expanding channel jump I was ruled out by experimental observations for angles higher than this. Sufficient evidence was achieved experimentally as well by. a close fit of the experimental data and the related theoretical solutions to conclude the angle as a limit to the expanding channel behaviour of the channels.
