Summary, etc. With growing energy prices, policy makers and researchers think that energy security would be a prime important factor of future development. Due to this reason many comprehensive energy security studies can be found all over the world. The approach long term least cost energy planning is widely applied for those studies. As energy importer, and as rapid developing economy, Sri Lanka would experience implications of energy security in future. Under this study, energy security of Sri Lankan energy system is studied with the development of long term least cost energy plan covering the period 2005 to 2050. For the development of energy plan, MARKAL energy economic modeling software is used. Development of energy planning model covers all the possible energy consuming technologies, all the possible conversion technologies and all the possible primary energy supply options. Apart from the development of energy planning model four policy options are considered for improvement of energy security of the country. Setting total primary energy supply reduction targets, is one of the options considered in the study. Primary energy supply is restricted to 95%, 90%, 85% and 80% of primary energy supply of base case. The change in primary energy supply mix, sectoral final energy consumption and energy security improvements are discussed in this report. The findings of the study revealed that total primary energy reduction targets do not help to improve the energy security of the country but they help to improve the overall efficiency in the energy system. Energy security improvements under energy import reduction targets are also analyzed comparing the energy security indices of the base case. Reduction targets of 90%, 80%, 70% and 60% of energy import of base case are considered for the analysis. The energy security improvements are measured estimating energy security indices for the whole planning period. It is observed a remarkable improvement of energy security indices under energy import reduction targets. Apart from the reduction targets, Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and Carbon tax schemes are also consider for the analysis. Under the renewable portfolio standards four different cases are studied. Even though RPS policies improve energy security of the county, observable improvements are minimal compared to other polices. This can be noticed from the variation energy security indices under the RPS policy. Carbon tax is not a direct energy security improvement policy. The effect of carbon tax for the improvement energy security of the country is studied considering four different carbon tax schemes. Tax schemes are designed based on IPCC carbon dioxide prices. Carbon tax creates considerable deviation of energy security indices form their values in the base case. Carbon tax has mixed effect on energy security indices. Estimations energy security indices; Net Energy Import Ratio, Indigenous Energy Ratio, Shannon-Wemier Index, Diversification of Primary Energy Demand, Vulnerability Index, and Herfindhal Hirschman Index are presented in this report. Apart from those indices, Energy Intensity, Per Capita Primary Energy Consumption, Per Capita Final Energy Consumption and Per Capita Emission indices are estimated and presented for all the policy cases
