| Summary, etc. | The Lao-Swedish Forestry Program (LSFP) has been implemented in five provinces in Lao PDR covering Phongsaly, Savannakhet, Salavan, Sekong and Champassack provinces. The LSFP intends to develop and implement integrated models and methods for sustainable forest and land resources management. The Program brought together the coordination from various agencies of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) under lead of Department of Forestry (DF). The research was undertaken in three target villages, namely, Ban Nong Hin, Ban Hoy Kong and Ban Thong Vay of Paksong District in Champassack province in the Southern part of Lao PDR. The objectives of this research are to study the existing situation of agricultural extension activities and its extent in providing services to rural people; to assess socio-economic benefits gained from the activities; to study people awareness on the activities and the satisfaction of them on project performance; to identify problems and constraints of the activities; and to give recommendations for future improvements. It was found out from this study that the practices of agricultural extension by farmers in the area were very limited and the extent of services provided by LSFP was insufficient to the need of rural people. Rural households received several benefits in social, economic and environmental aspects. The high degree of benefit was received from the environmental aspect and followed by social and economic aspects respectively. People were aware of LSFP agricultural extension activities in various degrees. Moreover, people were satisfied in several aspects of project performance. Major constraints and problems found in the activities are limited fund to be provided in each activity at village level and the lack of skill in agricultural extension among the extension staff, which limit the effectiveness in the delivery of services. Based on the identified problems, several recommendations were made to LSFP and the government of Lao PDR in specific to improve the implementation of the Program in future. |
