| Summary, etc. | The African-Thai marriages have been one of the consequences of migration brought about by globalization. This thesis focuses on Africa-Thai marriage relationships higWighting the gender and power relations plus the couples ideologies and practices relating to femininity and masculinity at the micro level, their individual motivations for the Africa-Thai marriage and the integration process of the African men in to the Thai society in addition to the societal perception and attitudes towards the Africa-Thai marriage relationship. As the first major study of its kind the research was based on an in-depth semi structured interviews with the African-Thai couples (eight couples), couples' friends and neighbors (thirteen men and women) and participants' observation. The interview provided a clearer insight on the experiences of the couples than did the literature on the theoretical or stereotypical ideas about interracial marriage and other matters relating to the couple's relational dynamics. Primary findings showed that the Africa-Thai marriage relationship is grounded on the existing gender role ideologies yet at the time shifting toward an egalitarian approach which employs little bit of flexibility in the way household responsibility and obligation are shared and fashion out. The Africa-Thai marriage relationship was met with strong disapproval especially from family members that points to underlining racial issues as the men try hard to integrate in to the Thai society. This thesis provides valuable first hand data and analysis that offers an alternative view of the relational dynamics of the couple, and the societal perception of the couples' relationship. This study will also provide a beginning framework for others interested in doing more research on intercultural relationships, the changing gender roles and power relations in such marital relationship |
