| Summary, etc. | This study deals with the analysis of freshwater fish marketing system in Bangkok and Pathumthani by applying the ''market structure-conduct-performance model" and also pays attention to production and marketing of fingerling and fish feed. Fish marketing has been considered from the farm level up to the retail level and emphasis was given to the following fish species: snake-head fish (Ophicephalus striatus), cat fish (Clarias batrachus), cat fish (Pangasius sutchi) and tilapia (Tilapia nilotica). It was discovered that there was only limited competition among fish wholesalers, especially in the first two species, but atomistic competition among fish retailers. However, these conditions varied according to the species of fish, location of fish production, and the access system, mainly in transportation, communication and marketing information. By and large, this study suggests that there is a necessity to reorganize the central freshwater fish markets on the periphery of Bangkok in such a way that the fish farmers, especially the small-scale fish farmers, have better opportunities to sell fish. The author believes that this can be done only with government involvement in the reorganization. |
