Summary, etc. The present investigation is concerned with the phenomenon of a gas jet impinging on and penetrating into a liquid. This study has been restricted to the case of axially symmetric and two dimensional jets penetrating the liquid at right angles. Air was the gas and water was the liquid. Three separate experimental arrangements were devised to obtain the necessary data; a. Axially symmetric flow into deep water (69 experiments). b. Axially symmetric flow into shallow water (110 experiments). c. Plane flow into an open channel (103 experiments). In these 282 experiments, the following quantities were varied: a. Nozzle diameter or width. b. Distance from nozzle to quiescent water surface. c. Water depth. d. Air velocity through nozzle throat. The following dependent variables were measured during each experiment: a. Maximum, minimum and average cavity depth. b. Cavity diameter or width. c. Height of lip around cavity. d. Amplitude of vertical oscillation of cavity bottom. e. Flow setting at which "sputtering" just commenced. These data were analyzed and plotted in terms of dimensionless parameters suggested from dimensional analysis and analytical models. As a result of this investigation, it is now possible to compute the depth of the cavity formed by a plane or circular gas jet penetrating into a liquid. It is also possible to de» termine the height of the resulting cavity lip and the width or diameter of the cavity. In addition, it is possible to deter» mine the conditions under which sputtering, with consequent drop and spray formation, will occur.
