520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of land utilization of the pulp and paper mill secondary effluent of the Siam Kraft Paper Company Ltd., Ban Pong, Thailand, by means of a pilot scale study. The system used for utilizing the effluent was irrigation and three hydraulic loadings of 10, 15 and 20 cm/wk were tried with corn as the experimental crop. COD and suspended solids removal were evaluated at two soil depths of 25 and 50 ems. The nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sodium removal efficiencies were studied along with the nutrient recovery and yield characteristics of corn. Results indicated that the secondary effluent could be used successfully for irrigation purposes, without of course, contaminating undergrounds water, agricultural land and crops. All three loadings recorded about 25-45% COD removal, minor leaching of suspended solids, 40-62% nitrogen removal, 0-25% phosphorus removal and 0-25% potassium removal. In the case of nitrogen, phosphorus nutrient harvested/nutrient applied decreased with increasing application rate. Yield characteristics indicated 20 cm/wk as the optimum hydraulic loading rates for growing corn which was comparable to 10 cm/wk loading of normal irrigation water. Grain yield of 15,053, 17,381 and 17,574 kg/ha were observed for three hydraulic loadings of 10, 15 and 20 cm/wk respectively. There were no adverse effects on the physical, chemical and hydraulic properties of the soil. If utilization of secondary effluent for irrigation and crop return is the sole objective, 15 cm/wk is the optimum loading giving economic yield comparable to normal irrigation water.
