| Summary, etc. | The performance evaluation of a typical secondary canal, the Lagar distributary of Lower Chenab Canal system of Rachna Doab area in Punjab, Pakistan, has been conducted for Rabi (winter) season 1987-88. Water delivery performance of the distributary system was assessed in terms of its objectives of adequacy, efficiency, dependability, and equity. An Optimization model was applied at tertiary unit level to analyze the present conjunctive use of ground water, which has become the integral part of irrigated agriculture in the study area. It was observed that the irrigation system operates below its potential level. Cropping pattern observed in the study area was similar throughout the canal command. The supplies were insufficient to meet even the design objectives of adequacy i.e. supplies were not sufficient for 50% cropping intensity. However, there is marked increase in cropping intensity of the study area due to conjunctive use of groundwater and it ranges from 150 to 200%. Farmers at the tail get canal discharges in less quantity and for less number of days as compared with head reach farmers. Equity and dependability pe1formance was "Poor". It was observed that at Relative Water Supply (RWS) value of 1.9, supply matches the crop water needs in the study area .. To obtain this value of RWS, a pumpage of 3500 cum of groundwater per hectare of CCA for the whole Rabi season is required to account for all losses and maximum cropping intensity in the study area. Dependability performance of the tertiary units decreases along the canal from head to tail, and simultaneously the ratio of groundwater use to total water supply increases in tertiary units of canal from head to tail. A relationship has been developed, for the Rabi season, between the dependability parameter and ratio of groundwater use to total supply. Through this relationship the groundwater pumpage can be predicted if canal operation data is known. Since canal water allowances are difficult to increase for the command area, conjunctive use of groundwater has to be increased, subject to the groundwater quality and availability. · The method used in this study gives both qualitative and quantitative view of water delivery performance and can be applied at all levels of irrigation system for performance evaluation. If the canal water deliveries cannot be increased, atleast the performance of existing systems should be improved to meet the performance standards. |
