| Summary, etc. | To expand its exports and decrease the volume of imports, Bangladesh must have good products to sell; efficient production and marketing systems; and an enthusiasm for competition. This study shows that the garment industry is a significant factor in the country's overall economy, not simply because of the dollars and numbers of employees involved, but because it represents a labor intensive and low technology manufacturing industry in serious and successful competition with related enterprises throughout the world. This export earning industry is very compatible with Bangladesh's socio-economic position. Times are changing, lifestyles are changing, manufacturing, marketing and financing are changing. Therefore Bangladesh must change from some practices which are slowly becoming archaic. It must be alert, ahead of time, to significant market demands. This comprehensive study of the Bangladeshi ready made garment industry had the purpose to assess the export competitiveness based on eleven measures framed by Multifiber Arrangement under the GATT in the international market and to set forth guidelines for its future growth and sustainability. In the research the author found that exploiting all comparative advantages through certain measures Bangladesh will never be driven out from the competitive world markets but rather will be enjoying a specific market share with long term growth prospects. Bangladesh must succeed in expanding the garment manufacturing from the lower end to the higher end. It needs to restructure its textile and ready made garment industries with appropriate backward and forward linkages, improve substantially its labor productivity and management efficiency. It must implement well formulated cost reduction and product diversification strategies. Supportive policy packages from the government will have to be broadened and made more effective. Most importantly the author concludes the government must opt for high quality political and business diplomacy to cope with other forms of non tariff barriers, prevalent in international markets and discriminating Bangladeshi ready made garment exports. |
