Eng..) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1987 Summary: In this study an attempt was made to model the energy requirements in the Indian transport sector with the objective of forecasting interfuel substitution in medium to long term perspective. MEDDE-S approach was used to structure the model. Data base was prepared by collecting data from India. Sensitivity tests were carried out on the model to check its consistency and study the possibilities of errors . Different scenarios were analysed to see the effect of variation in certain important parameters. Penetration of CNG as a substitute for petroleum fuels was in troduced in the scenario and various aspects were studied. Eco nomics of vehicle conversion for CNG use and break-even analysis for CNG refueling stations was done. Two scenarios were formulated to gauge the total substitution of CNG under given conditions. It was found that substitution of CNG transport sector is not only a feasible option, nomically attractive proposition.
