Monitoring the Second Bangkok International Airport (SBIA) project area and its vicinities by integrating remote sensing and GIS techniques

The Second Bangkok International Airport (SBIA) area and its vicinities, Bang phli & Bang Bo districts, one of the most dynamic area in Samut Prakan Province of Bangkok Metropolitan Region(BMR.), was chosen as a case study area. The available land use data and socio-economic records were collected and input into GIS database. the multi-sensor, multi-temporal satellite images of MSS 1978, TM 1988, TM 1993 and SAR 1992(ERS-l)were analyzed within digital image processing system in conjection with GIS, which gives satisfied classification accuracy about 80% overall accuracy on both TM date 1988 and 1993. The post-classification comparisons of classified image were conducted to derive the land use change maps. The developed land use database was updated by remote sensing image analysis. The land use database management and statistical and spatial analysis were done to study the land use dynamics of the study area during 25 years(1968-1993). The most important land use categories-built-up area expansion over time. The multivariate reveals the close relationship between road network development and expansion of built-up areas. Road network and fruit-tree plantations that help analysts understand the spatial distribution of the changes. The spatial analysis model provides the surface simulation of the expansion of built-up area in 2003. The integrated GIS/image processing system in corporation with the statistical package applied in defining land use dynamics in the study area proved very effective. The applied methodology is recommended for land use change analysis of other area.
