Due to a lack of appropriate records for specific sites, methods for generating non-stationary artificial ground motions for a given construction site in terms of magnitude and epicentral distance are very useful. The suggested method is based on the physical spectrum theory and the spectral parameters represent the non-stationary amplitude and frequency characteristics. By assuming a shape of the physical spectrum model and using multivariate statistical analysis, a physical spectrum model is estimated for a given construction site in terms of magnitude and epicentral distance. Subsequently, the non-stationary artificial ground motions with the estimated physical spectrum model can be generated by means of a non-stationary random process. Consequently, non-stationary artificial ground motions with the earthquake properties known previously can be generated for a give construction site in terms of magnitude and epicentral distance.
