The unit has an ammonia- water system constructed of black steel pipe, and a solar heating system using water as the heat transfer fluid between the solar collector and the generator. An electric pump is used to circulate the water in two loops. The flow of ammonia refrigerant is by pressure differences in the system and gravity. Hand valves, includes a hand- operated expansion valve, are used to control the flows. On a moderately fine day, the solution temperature in the generator rose to 95°C, water temperature at the outlet of collector rose to 97°C and 1.5 kg of ammonia liquid were produced with a solar collector area of 2 m2. The refrigeration process could be started at 6 p.m., earlier than previous systems. Procedures for student experiments are outlined.
