Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1983 Summary: This study is an analysis of tilapia fishery modes in Santiago, Bato (Camarines Sur, Philippines) and it also examines the fish culture practices from production through marketing. The study revealed that the average annual yield in tons for the fish cage farmer is 8.5 times higher than for the sustenance fisherman and almost 3 times higher than that of the sustenance-cum-fish cage farmer. Taking all costs into account, it was on the average cheaper to produce an kilogram of fish (P4.92) by sustenance-cum-fish cage farming as compared to the fish cage farmer (P7.95) and the sustenance fisherman (P5.05). This study suggests that a fishermen's cooperative be established in the study area to service the needs of the fisherman and/or fish-farmers in the area. The needs to be catered for, in the first place, are the production of fry and the construction of the tilapia cages. The author believes that the initiative to form a cooperative should come from the concerned fishermen themselves.
