Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1984 Summary: The fluidized bed reactor has been found to be effective for anaerobic digestion of cowdung. In this process sand with size approximately 0.5 mm was fluidized in a cylindrical column. The digestion of cowdung has been carried out in three modes namely batch digestion, intermittent digestion and continuous digestion. In the batch experiments, it was found that the gas production was very high compared to the conventional digester. The intermittent experiments show that it is possible to run the fluidized bed anaerobic digester in intermittent mode without any problem. During the intermittent experiment, the gas production and the removal efficiency of VSS and COD were again high. The continuous experiments indicated a poor removal of COD and low gas production; this was probably due to some air leakage into the system. A theoretical expression for the substrate removal efficiency has been derived. The theory correctly predicts the nature of variation of substrate removal efficiency with retention time.
